Heavy Blanket – Moon Is (2023)

“J Mascis is back with his legendary instrumental psych project Heavy Blanket! Heavy Blanket’s debut LP was a mind blowing showcase of J’s psychedelic guitar work, and the follow up live LP with Earthless’ rhythm section as the backing band was the next step in Heavy Blanket’s journey. Over the years J has been stashing away his heaviest riffs for this project and he finally got the chance to head into the studio, backed once again by the original mysterious Heavy Blanket rhythm section. This time he also brought in his Witch bandmates Dave Sweetapple and Graham Clise for an extra dose of heavy.”

Carlton Melton – Microwavelengths (2022)

“Recorded after the band’s mostly ambient Hidden Lights EP and a year before the next proper full-length Mind Minerals, the fellas got together for a smoldering Northern California jam session… The results of that rock and roll heatwave can now be heard on Microwavelengths, a 5-track excursion into free form psych, hazy drones, and all out fuzz freakouts that sound as if Hendrix’ Experience were hipped to Krautrock in some kind time/space conundrum before Krautrock was a thing.”

Earthless – Night Parade of One Hundred Demons (2022)

“There’s an ancient Japanese legend in which a horde of demons, ghosts and other terrifying ghouls descend upon the sleeping villages once a year. Known as Hyakki Yagyō, or the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons, one version of the tale states that anyone who witnesses this otherworldly procession will die instantly—or be carried off by the creatures of the night. As a result, the villagers hide in their homes, lest they become victims of these supernatural invaders. Such is the inspiration for the latest album from EARTHLESS… Whereas 2018’s Black Heaven featured shorter songs and vocals from guitarist Isaiah Mitchell on much of the album—an unprecedented move for the San Diego power trio—their latest is a return to the epic instrumentals EARTHLESS made their unmistakable name on. Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons is comprised of two monster songs—the 41-minute, two-part title track and the 20-minute “Death To The Red Sun.”… All told, Night Parade of One Hundred Demons isn’t just a return to the band’s traditional format—it’s a return to their very beginnings.”

The Myrrors – Invocaciones: Instrumental Singles and Strays (2014-2016) (2021)

“The Myrrors lose themselves in transcendental improvisation… in free flowing circular raga mode. It’s a state of playing that takes take the listener into a deeply shamanistic ecstatic state that is both spellbinding and enrapturing, were you are treated to the music that rivals the free flowing communal progg freakdom of late 60’s/early 70s Germany/ Scandinavia but transported to the Arabian desert. Here a cacophony of flute and whistles, viola, tape loops, alto saxophone, bulbul tarang and guitars churn and cavort through ebbing cosmic shimmer and ecstatic pulsing ritualistic Eastern drones. Try imagining The Velvet Underground, The Taj Mahal Travellers and Parson Sound transported to the Arabian desert. It is ecstatic and otherworldly as you open up your mind and let everything come through – The Myrrors have found the keys to the kingdom of heaven.”

Free Whenever – Jam Junkies, Vol. 1 (2021)

“Free Whenever is an American psychedelic rock duo formed in 2020 in Brooklyn, NY. It was co-founded by multi-instrumentalist pair Neil Guleria and Trevor LaVecchia, who are responsible for all of the band’s writing, performing, recording, and production. The band’s signature sounds include freeform electric guitar and bass melodization, effects-heavy analog synthesizers, and a blend of acoustic drums and hand percussion. They have a vast range of influences both in and outside of their immediate genre, but the core inspiration of behind the band’s psychedelic sound character comes from both classic artists like Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, and Grateful Dead and contemporary artists like Tommy Guerrero, RHCP, Tame Impala, MGMT, and Khruangbin.”

Sunn Trio – Electric Esoterica (2020)

“Enter Sunn Trio. A punk trio that is influenced by Middle Eastern psych, free jazz, and improvisation… trio that composes music that challenges every notion of what rock, punk, or psych can be; however, at the same time, the music is crafted with improvisational focus and middle eastern influence that should be the basis for this generation’s new music… The music has an import that shows a deference to eastern music, while expressing a freedom that isn’t present in any modern music.”
